Spookathon 2018

Hello spooky people! This year I decided to participate in spookathon. In case you don’t know what it is, spookathon is a spooky readathon hosted by BooksandLala. It was from the 15th of October till the 22nd of October. For a whole week, you had to read as many books as you could fitting under five challenges. The five challenges were: read a thriller, a book with purple on the cover, a book with pictures, a book with a spooky word in the title, and a book not set in your time period. This was my first readathon and I am so happy with how it went. So, if you decide(which I hope you do) to continue reading, you will discover the books I read for the challenges.

The first challenge was to read a thriller. For this challenge I decided to pick up a book I bought earlier this year which is The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware.  This book is about a journalist who boards a cruise ship for an assignment. One night she hears a scream and a splash next door. The only problem is, no one is staying in that cabin. I’ll be honest, I don’t feel that this book is really a thriller. I think I would classify this more as a bit of a mystery book. The beginning was slow. If this wasn’t for spookathon I probably would of DNFed the book. That being said, the ending definitely made up for the slow beginning in my eyes. I’m not going to go into the ending because of spoilers. All I’m really going to say is that it was so creative and not something I completely guessed. Rating: 4/5 stars.

The next challenge is read a book with purple on the cover(double check). For this challenge I decided to pick up Because You Love to Hate Me. This book is an anthology filled of tories about villains. Whats cool with this book is that the prompts for each story is written by booktubers. The authors collaborating on this book then take the prompts and write a story. Since this book is made of 13 different stories its hard to review it as a whole. There were some stories which I loved. Adam Silvera’s story was my favorite. His story was in second person so it gave me this sensation that I was the main character and I just loved that aspect of the story. And among stories that I loved, there were some stories I was just not so fond of. Overall I greatly enjoyed this book and all the different writing styles in each story. Rating: 4/5 stars.

The third challenge is read a book not set in your time period. For this challenge I read Stalking Jack the Ripper. This book is about a girl, Audrey Rose, who tries and brings the famous serial killer Jack the Ripper, to justice. Upon reading this I found out it also had pictures in it, so I decided to also count it for the challenge read a book with pictures. I enjoyed this book so much. I want to be a coroner/medical examiner so I found myself relating to the character a ton. I enjoyed the writing style and the mystery kept me intrigued. I liked how although the author changed things to fit the plot and story, she stayed as true as she could to the historic events. Rating: 4/5 stars.

The last challenge was read a book with a spooky word in the title. I was originally going to read An Overdose of Death by Agatha Christie. However, my copy was falling apart so it became a tad hard to read. So I decided to switch gears and picked up Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. The book was about three queens who each have a separate gift. These queens are separated at a young age and are brought up to strengthen their gift. The catch, one sister has to kill the others in order to be queen. This book was so enjoyable, I couldn’t put it down. This world was just so fascinating to me and I thought it was well created. I had a little issue with the end involving a character but other than that I enjoyed this book so much. Rating: 3/5 stars

So! There you have it, a little overview of the books I read for Spookathon and my thoughts on them. For my first readathon I am surprised I completed all the challenges. With school and life I wasn’t exactly sure if I would be able to finish all the books I had planned, but I was able to!

Have you ever done a readathon? If you have, let me know how it went for you!
